N95 Qualitative Mask Fit Test
Ensures your N95 respirator forms an effective seal around your face, providing the protection required when working in environments with airborne hazards. Commonly required for healthcare professionals, first responders, laboratory personnel, construction workers, and others required to wear a properly fitted N95 respirator. Fit testing is conducted in accordance with recognized standards by qualified medical healthcare professionals.

Test Procedure
The fit test is conducted by a qualified tester using an approved qualitative testing solution (bitter or sweet). While wearing the N95 respirator, participants perform a series of exercises to evaluate the seal, including: normal breathing, deep breathing, turning the head side to side, moving the head up and down, speaking aloud, bending over or jogging in place, and returning to normal breathing. If the participant does not detect the testing solution during any exercise, the respirator has achieved a successful fit.
Before Your Appointment
Please:
- Be clean-shaven where the respirator seals against your face (beards, stubble, or facial hair that interferes with the seal are not permitted)
- Bring the N95 respirator model(s) required by your employer or educational institution, if applicable
- Wear comfortable clothing that allows you to move freely during the test
- Inform the tester of any medical conditions or respiratory concerns that may affect your ability to wear a respirator
For at least 30 minutes before your fit test, please avoid:
- Eating or drinking anything except water
- Smoking or vaping
- Chewing gum, mints, or candy
- Using mouthwash
- Wearing any perfume, cologne, scented body sprays, or scented lotions
- Applying strongly scented cosmetics or other personal care products
A new fit test may be required if there are significant changes to facial structure, weight, or if a different respirator model/size is used.
